Identification of Military-related Science and Technology

A proof-of-principle demonstration for extracting military-related technologies from a country's total technology publications has been performed, and applied to the Indian science and technology literature#. The method is general and can be applied to the extraction of any meta-category (e.g., intelligence-relevanttechnologies, infrastructure-relevant technologies, etc) which is not easily obtained from document clustering or factor analysis. The methodology for identifying relevant literature on military science appears to provide credible results. The volume of literature retrieved will vary depending on how strongly relevant is the desired literature. For the same definitions of 'military relevant', the volume of India's literature in the Ei Compendex database was an order of magnitude less than that of the USA or China.Defence Science Journal, 2010, 60(3), pp.259-270, DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.14429/dsj.60.35

Log-linear Model to Assess Socioeconomic and Environmental Factors with Childhood Diarrhea Using Hospital Based Surveillance

Categorical outcomes with environment factors analyzed by log linear model are frequent in the environmental epidemiological literature. Epidemiological and socio-economical factors were obtained on 1,119 children below the age of 5 from Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) at the Kolkata, India. Significant associations of diarrhea were observed in the rural areas with family income, father’s occupation as a daily labor, literacy of parents, non-cemented floor and wall constructed of mud, and type of storage (wide mouthed earthen pot). The results of the study with specific Log linear model confirm environmental factors were important implications for childhood diarrhea in the rural community. To reduce the diseases burden, the intervention strategies such as education, improvement of economic status and living environment are recommended

Performance of engineering parameters of a water treatment plant: a case study

Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), constructed a 30 mgd. capacity water treatment plant at Kamarhati, a municipal town, which is nearly 15 km. away from Kolkata. The plant started functioning in April, 1993. The plant consisted of conventional clariflocculators and rapid gravity filters. The source of water is river Hoogly; The plant supplies treated surface water to six adjoining municipalities catering the need of nearly 1.3 million population. In order to operate an efficient treatment system to achieve water of desirable quality, environmental safety and amenability for sustenance, a study was conducted throughout a year to identify and evaluate the performance of engineering parameters of treatment units such as clariflocculators, filter bed etc. A few technical findings are discussed in this paper on the efficiency of clarifloculators. The filter bed performance is assessed in terms of filter media, size distribution. Samples of backwash water is also collected for estimation of selective physico-chemical parameters
